Q: What if my job fires me for speaking up?

A: If you are concerned about termination for speaking up, you have rights! Know that the  Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) in Ontario provides workers with rights and responsibilities. It prohibits employers from penalizing workers in reprisal for obeying the law or exercising their rights. You can find more information at http://www.labour.gov.on.ca/english/hs/topics/reprisal.php

Remember, as a young worker, you have the right to refuse unsafe work, as well as the right to participate in the health and safety process at your job. In the future, if you are concerned that these rights aren't being respected, you can call the Ministry of Labour in Ontario to report any sort of health and safety incidents, concerns about unsafe work, work refusal and more. You can reach the Health and Safety Contact Centre for free, 24/7, at 1-877-202-0008.
